I have never heard a rendition of this beautiful song I didn't love.Maybe it's because whenever I hear one I see "the face in the misty light",the most beautiful of all women, the haunting Gene Eliza Tierney."Lady Fitz" soulfully captured the essence of "Laura".What a brilliant singer she was.

Mmm, yeah this song sounds better in a woman's voice. Ella is stellar.

Wikipedia: This track is from "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Song Book," a 1964 studio album backed by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Gene Tierney is not much spoken of any more. That is less than fair. IMHO, her only rivals in the golden age of Hollywood were Audrey Hepburn and the young Elizabeth Taylor. Tierney's career ended prematurely in the mid 1950s, when it became clear she was bipolar.

Lovely song, never saw the movie until a few years back. It's a very haunting and beautiful melody. I have it in many different ways with many different singers and orchestras, but Ella Fitzgerald, thank you for posting this one, it's gorgeous.

That melody--singularly haunting, and Ella is in superb voice. Just gorgeous.

I think it's an impossibly beautiful haunting melody... There is something hazy, dreamy and a bit sad in it. And that sinister arpeggio makes it perfect for a film noir!

Cette introduction reste dans la tète et ELLA arrive... Qui a fait l'orchestration? Celle de Gordon Jenkins pour Sinatra est super aussi!!

I really enjoyed this wonderful thrilling film noir, and the song! It really suits the movie, cos it's so complex, dark, mystical and dreamy. I love how the key changes throughout the song. Many versions are great - Ella's, Sinatra's, Julie London's...
